Copper platers of air bearing spindles

Squirrel cage rotor

For 36 years we have been putting the copper rotor bars into air bearing spindles. Typically these spindles rotate at 100,000 to 300,000+ rpm. The trick is to get the copper to stick to the steel. We do not manufacture the spindles...all we do is put the rotor windings in as a sub contract manufacturing process. Sounds simple but we continue to push the boundaries of physics to cope with ever increasing speeds and stresses.

For this reason we have a well equipped department with facilities to perform microstructural analysis on the electrodeposited copper and the base material. We also perform tensile testing, microhardness testing, adhesion testing and short and long term testing of the thermal performance of the copper.

We have robust data logging and record keeping facilities for quality control and also to enable us to track back the plating history of each shaft by means of its serial number.

The main production factory is near Chester in the UK but we also now have a second factory in North Wales currently carrying out service, repairs and parts manufacture for the Tarvin operation and research and development on new processes and prototype plating.

Company

Since July 2009 the company has been owned and managed by the founders daughter Wendy Chilton.
The founder Bob Chilton now works primarily at the North Wales factory on R&D. A brand new company website is available here
