I purchased a bag of potting soil, put it in my garage and sort of forgot about it. Some sort of fungi/mushrooms have grown through the plastic bag. (it took several Months to do this) They started as a cluster of knobs and several weeks they are a cluster of fungi simular to woodears, white in color. The clusters are 7 inches wide, 5 inches tall. A good 25-30 ears to each cluster. If you desire, I can send a picture of them for you to identify. ............. I wish I had known sooner about them being edible. They went to spores last week and then began turning brown. The potting soil is:\Earth's Finest Potting Soil. Packaged by Letco Group, 1901 California Crossing, Dallas, Texas, 75220. No mention of ingredients. 100% Organic is all that is on the 40 pound Plastic sack. (Plus a heavy collection of spores) ............ When I went out to take a closer look at the bag this morning, I have spores in about a 3-4 foot diameter. It was difficult just to move it aside to find the bag. It looked like someone had spray painted my work table. The story of the potting soil is this. The grocery store last spring had potting soil, cedar bark and fertilizer stacked up for sale so wives could punish their husbands. I bought 4 bags of potting soil and had the one left over just laying on my work bench/junk catcher in my cold semi-dark garage. Around Thanksgiving I noticed the bag had started pertruding in several places, by mid December the clusters of fungi was a bunch of buttons. I did not encourge or discourage their growth. However my wife thought they were "cute". Could the spores be swept up and used? How could I grow them in my garage? I tried several years ago to grow mushrooms in my closet. As with most things you try to grow, they started and promptly died.I just may learn something about mushrooms ............ I will pass on a zipped jpg file of the original pictures on request rob@chilton.u-net.com Thank you Howard
